Building ATLAS from scratch

Derrick Walker, a student at the Australian Science and Mathematics School, has just finished his research project featuring the ATLAS LEGO model. As part of his project, Derrick found supporters to finance the necessary 9517 pieces, ordered them and spent more than 72 hours to build the model. Currently, Derrick’s model is on display at his school and he plans to show it various exhibitions in the Adelaide area.

ATLAS & Me

An example from François Englert, Nobel laureate.

Today we started “ATLAS & Me”, your chance to ‘socialise’ with BYOPD and ATLAS.

We would like you to post pictures of you and one of the ATLAS brick models on our Facebook page (facebook.com/BuildYourOwnParticleDetector)!
Those of you with the most likes in a given month can win an ATLAS 3D viewer and will be featured on our web site.

Find more details on our ATLAS & Me page.

Building ATLAS in Oslo

The ATLAS group at University of Oslo has just finished building their ATLAS brick model and documented it with a very nice time-lapse movie.

After members of the group already helped with the sorting of the pieces at CERN, now students as well as professors took part in the construction of the model in Oslo. Though the group has experience in manufacturing parts of the actual ATLAS detector, building the 50:1 scale model still took more than 30 man hours in total.
